Have you ever been sick that no boxes of chocolates, no bouquet of flowers, no large stuffed animals or even delicious food could take away all that painful, miserable feeling?
And people who cares about you visit you, giving you “get well soon” messages, but instead of making you feel so much better, it makes you feel a little more down?
Yes, sometimes being sick makes you really sensitive, physically and emotionally and we are here to help you figure out the things you should and should not say when you visit a sick loved one and the perfect message you should write on their “get well soon” card.
What to write in the card with the “get well soon” package
Of course, we want to send a care package containing their favorite fruits (or fruits that the doctor recommended, their favorite flavors of cupcakes (or cupcakes with the prettiest designs), a bouquet of their favorite flowers (or the kind of flowers that can brighten up the room) or maybe a bucket of their favorite fried chicken (if the doctor approves) but along with these things, do not forget to include a card with a special message.
Let’s get to the dos and don’ts of writing a “get well soon” note:
Do NOT remind the person of the tasks he/she needs to catch up on.
When you remind the person has a lot of tasks to do when he/she got better, it will only cause them anxiousness, slight disappointment or maybe even depression.
You’ll trigger their minds to think “there’s a lot of things you need to do and being sick is not one of them” and they’ll feel pressured to get better instead of relaxing to feel better.
Get well soon, dear! You have a lot of work to do, so you better get well really soon.
Better drink your meds on time, you missed a lot of exams this week.
Do make them feel that they are missed.
People tend to become more motivated when they feel that they are appreciated and missed, when they feel like their absence make a difference to the people around them.
The office feels so different without your mischievous laugh around, get well soon honey.
Hey bro, just so you know, the game sucks without you. Heal yourself right away! The team misses you.
Lunch breaks and gym class aren’t the same when you’re not around, bestie. Get well soon! xoxo
Charlie (his/her dog) misses your morning walks, he says ‘arf arf arf arf’ (get well soon, buddy).
Do NOT trivialize others’ pain (sickness).
It may be just a simple cough or common colds but different persons have different levels of pain tolerance.
Maybe you just shake off occasional fever, but for some, it is a bigger deal than you think it is.
So, avoid telling them “it’s JUST fever, you know” if you don’t want to be unfriended on Facebook and un-followed on Twitter and Instagram. Just avoid saying or writing “JUST”, that’s the point. Show them some (a lot) of sympathy.
I know having the flu is tough and I know you can knock that flu out. Please get better soon, everybody misses you.
Do make them feel happy in any way possible
Ever heard of “laughter is the best medicine”? It is true! Humor can make someone feel better because when you are happy, you laugh (not all the time, but make it your goal). We can say that laughing can be a form of an exercise, and when you exercise, your body releases endorphin’s.
What are endorphin, you may ask? Endorphin’s are hormones responsible for relieving anxiousness and stress. They are the hormones responsible for making us feel good.

I heard you had your wisdom tooth removed, and I know that’s a lot of pain to endure. But you have less teeth to brush, so congratulations!
Do NOT dwell on the negative events.
If your loved one has recently undergone surgery it is better to say,
I am relieved that the surgery went well instead of saying :
I am sorry you lost your tonsils.
Always, always, always, pour a lot of positive vibes on your message. Here are some words you might use: hope, heal, recover, wish, love, miss, pray, better, speedy, full, healthy, energetic, whole, new, comfort, care, support and recovery. Did these words trigger your creative juices to flow? Jumble up those words, add some more positive ones, insert a term of endearment, put them together and you will have a very enlightening and comforting get well soon message:
Hi darling, I am praying for your speedy recovery. I wish you better health. I love you.
I wish you get well soon because I miss the energetic you. Be healthy again soon.
Sending you virtual comfort hugs all the way from Jersey! Get better soon.
Sent you thoughtful prayers wrapped in hugs and kisses. Hoping for your speedy recovery.
You cutie patootie better get well soon, for I have sent all my love, care and comfort all the way from here. I love you!
What to say when visiting someone who is not feeling well
There is not much difference with the messages you should and should not write on a get well soon letter and the things you should say when you visit someone unwell.
But because you are physically there, you can see the person and the other person can see you, avoid making him/her feel like he/she looks different (unwell).
Always remember rule number 5, avoid negative comments; and rule number 4, make them happy. Telling them messages such as:
You look pale, dear.
You look thin, eat more food.
You lost a lot of weight, hun.
(This may be a negative of a positive comment depending on the person’s personality.. and weight. Kidding.)
Will only make them feel worse about themselves, you are just reminding them of their sickness.
Remember rule number 5? Avoid negative comments. So I suggest you compliment them a little, a little white lie would not hurt and may help them feel a lot better about themselves.
You look good. I can tell you are feeling better and better.
I can see more brightness in your eyes today. You are feeling better, aren’t you?
Reading those messages made you feel better (even if you’re not feeling under the weather), didn’t you?
Imagine how the other person will feel when they hear those words. Also, do not forget to add sincerity. Make it sound like you mean it and make it sound like it is true.
Here are some more messages that you can write in your letter or tell them personally.
It will be better if you add more personal details so they would not think that you got your message from the internet.
I wish you are having plenty of rest so you will get better really quick. We miss your vibrant smile and the cheerful you.
I am praying that every day will bring you more and more energy for you to recover as soon as possible. We miss you a lot, you know.
Please get well quick so we can party real soon! I am saving all the vodkas for you.
Are you feeling like Barney, too? Is the awesomeness overflowing through your nose, too? Haha. I am trying my best to make you happy, so you better get your lazy ass up as soon as possible! Love you!
I hope you recover as fast as The Flash. Get well soon, baby girl!
I requested Robert Downy Jr to visit you so he could give you hugs and kisses. But he is busy with all the tapings so he just sent this package. Kidding, you know it’s from me. Get well real soon, please.
I think there’s something wrong with the world, or maybe my world isn’t the same when you’re not around. Please recover soon, my heart longs for you already.
Have you seen the sky tonight? The universe laid out wonderful stars as its way of telling you to get well soon.
I will never stop praying you get well until you can do cartwheels again. Miss you!
Days feel longer without you bothering the hell out of us. We miss you annoying us. Get well soon!
I received a memo today. RE: It’s time for you to get better. Haha! Our office misses you, but I miss you more.
If you think about it, it really is not difficult to write a get well soon letter. All you need is (at least) a little care, a lot of sincerity, a touch of sympathy, add some good intentions and voila, you will have the perfect get well soon message. Remember, wherever you write it and however you write it, it is the thought that always count.
They will appreciate the message as long as it came from the heart and as long as it came with a really good care package.
Kidding! When you are not feeling like your usual self, a little kindness, sympathy and comfort will definitely make you feel better. When you see someone exerting effort to make you feel more comfortable and to help you recover, you will always be thankful.
Keep those things in mind every time you are to comfort somebody, and you will be one step closer to being the best friend, best sister, best brother, best parent, best cousin, best aunt, best uncle or just the best stranger in the whole wide world.
